Kirikiriroa

Over the course of my time in Kirikiriroa I have watched it grow up and mature into a thriving little city.
It’s the place that has adopted me as a local.
It’s the place I built my business.
It’s the place where I met my wife.
It’s the place my kids call home.
The place that I call home.
In this new project, we will be looking at other people in this city and it’s catchment area.
Who they are and where they are from.
Are they connected to the place they live?
What is their relationship with their hair?
This is our city.
The city of the future.
This is our people.
Real people. Pure Hair.
Tell us a bit about yourself:
My name is Charli Herbert, I am 21 years old and I grew up in Orini.
I am currently in my third year of a Bachelor of Music degree at Wintec. I predominately sing and play the guitar. I also play in an indie-jazz band called Ophelia.
Tell us about your neighbourhood:
Orini is a dairy farming neighbourhood about 15-20 minutes north of Hamilton. I have lived there for my entire life. A section of our farm has been in my family for just over 100 years.
My brothers and I are the fifth generations to live on the farm.
I love living in the country. I think that it’s really good for the soul.. the sunrises and sunsets are always beautiful. I love that we are so close to beaches, cities, snow, lakes, mountains and the bush. Living in the Waikato is awesome.  We are very lucky.
Tell us about your likes:
My main love is music. My passion is writing and performing my songs and finally recording them.
I love listening to my favourite artists or attending gigs. I find that music always aids whatever mood I am in.
The outdoors is also so important to me – I really enjoy hiking, exercising, swimming and going to the beach… fresh air is essential for my happiness.
I love travelling and experiencing new places and laughing with the people who are most important to me.
What is your relationship with your hair?
My relationship with my hair has changed a lot over the last few years.  In high school, I was into sports far more than I was into anything arty so I had very ‘sporty’ hair.  Recently I’ve tried to make my hair my own.  I think that hair can be such an individual and defining feature in each person and I have really enjoyed growing the confidence to express myself through my hair.  My relationship with my hair is definitely a positive and exciting one…it is part of who I am.
How does your relationship with your hair affect your style?
My hair has definitely had a massive effect on my style and additionally my confidence. Both my hair and style have changed and evolved together as I’ve become more confident in myself and my identity.
Figuring out who I was outside of the school structure with uniforms and the like was a massive part of this and changing my hair to feel more like ‘me’ eased that process a lot.  Changing my hair has shifted my self-expression, how I dress and therefore my music taste and the musician and person that I want to be. Confidence in my hair has created confidence in myself and improved my relationship with myself.
